Batallas
Through large-scale photographic production, the artist brings to life the Batallas series, recreating key moments from Argentina’s War of Independence.
In a monumental effort, Lauda mobilizes the current Argentine army to special locations to capture the perfect shot—movement, light, and atmosphere play a crucial role in every piece. The images echo traits of European historical painting: the Romantic spirit and the power of glory are ever-present.
Lauda manages to transcend the purely military aspect of history to highlight effort, labor, and camaraderie. The expressions captured in the most dramatic scenes make us hear the cries and galloping hooves, while also allowing us to perceive moments of calm amidst vastness.
The mountains of the Andes crossing and the Pampas plains, as well as the presence of horses—an element recurrent in Gonzalo’s work—are as central as the soldiers in combat.

"If a time machine existed and we could witness the battles of Ituzaingó, Maipú, or San Lorenzo, we would see something very much like the photographs gathered here—works by Gonzalo Lauda."
